How hospitalists reacted to four statements about respect

We asked hospitalists about respect from their group members, other specialists and administrators

HOW MUCH RESPECT do hospitalists feel they receive in their day-to-day jobs? To try to answer that, we asked them to respond to four statements on our annual survey.

Perhaps not surprisingly, hospitalists said they feel like they’re the most respected by members of their own group. When asked whether they agree with the statement, “As a hospitalist, I am respected by my colleagues in my group,” 90% did. That number was even higher for pediatric hospitalists: 94.7%.

The highest level of feeling disrespect was logged in reaction to this statement, “My group’s input counts in decisions made by my administration.” Nearly one-third of adult hospitalists (31.9%) disagreed with that statement. That number was even higher—47.4%—among pediatric hospitalists.

Academic hospitalists seem to feel a little more respected, showing higher rates of agreement with three of the four statements we presented. While 94.4% of academic hospitalists said they’re respected by their own group members, that number was lower among nonacademic hospitalists: 87.1%.

Nocturnists reported lower levels of agreement on all four statements. When asked about the statement, “My group’s input counts in decisions made by administration,” only 28.1% of nocturnists concurred. By comparison, 46.5% of hospitalists working day shifts other than seven-on/seven-off agreed.

On a statement about respect from other specialties—”As a hospitalist, I am respected by my colleagues in other specialties”— older hospitalists were more likely to agree. Among hospitalists with one to four years of experience, 41.4% agreed. Among hospitalists with 15-19 years of experience, by comparison, 67.3% agreed as well.

Responding to that same statement, men were more likely to agree (64%) than women (56.6%).
