How many shifts a month do hospitalists work?

How many weekday and weekend shifts do hospitalists work in an average month? According to data from the 2019 Today’s Hospitalist Compensation & Career Survey, hospitalists on average work just under 16 weekday shifts a month and 3.57 weekend shifts a month.

Hospitalists working at medical schools and universities report working the most shifts per month, at 17.24. The number of shifts that hospitalists work per month is higher for physicians who have been in the specialty longer. Physicians who have worked in hospital medicine for five to nine years, for example, work an average of 16.38 shifts per month. (That number falls slightly for hospitalists who have worked in the specialty for 10 years or more.)
