What do pediatric hospitalists earn?

IN THE 2022 Today’s Hospitalist Compensation & Career Survey, pediatric hospitalists reported a mean compensation of $222,946 (median $211,000) for 2021. Just under one-third—30%—reported a 2021 income between $200,000 and $224,999. Another one-third reported earning between $150,000 and $199,999, and another one-third earned $225,000 or more. Low to no income growth
Since our 2019 survey, compensation for pediatric hospitalists grew by only 3.4%. The mean reported in our 2019 survey (for 2018 compensation) was $214,885.

On our 2022 survey, we asked whether 2021 pay had increased or decreased from the previous year. About 18% of pediatric hospitalists said their pay had risen by an average of about 7%. Just over two-thirds (69.1%) said their income stayed the same, and 12.7% said that their income had actually dropped from the previous year.

When it came to income from extra shifts, 44.5% of pediatric hospitalists said they didn’t earn any of that income in 2021. Of those who did report income from extra shifts, they saw a mean of about 5% of their annual income from that income.

Gender gap
Male pediatric hospitalists out earn females by 6%, making $232,391 compared to $220,090 for their female colleagues.

Salary vs. bonus and incentive pay
Slightly more than one-half (54%) of pediatric hospitalists earn straight salary, while 46% are paid a combination of salary and incentives.

Pediatric hospitalists report earning a mean of $27,984 from bonuses and incentives. those bonus/incentive amounts represented 11.6% of their annual income in 2021. While 18.8% reported only individual incentives and 36.5% said they had only group-based incentives, 44.7% reported a combination of the two.

Three-quarters of pediatric hospitalists (78%) didn’t receive a pandemic-related bonus. But those who did reported a mean amount of $13,396. By comparison, nonacademic full-time hospitalists who treat adults saw a mean pandemic-related bonus of $6,590.
