How does work experience affect hospitalist pay?

While there are differences in compensation based on experience, they're often not large

HOW DOES YEARS of work experience affect hospitalist pay? To answer that question, we looked at data from our 2023 Today’s Hospitalist Compensation & Career Survey.

To start, mean compensation for all hospitalists who treat adults was $339,348. That number goes up or down depending on years in the field as well as how long hospitalists have been in their current jobs, although the differences between highs and lows aren’t necessarily large.

The biggest pay differences were reported based on how long hospitalists have worked in the specialty. For example, there’s a 25% difference between newcomers and those working as hospitalists for 15-19 years, with more experienced physicians earning more.

Here are mean compensation figures based on how many years respondents have worked as hospitalists:

2 years or less: $279,192

3-4 years: $326,586

5-9 years: $340,097

10-14 years: $352,070

15-19 years: $347,333

20+ years: $338,660

Differences in compensation are a little less pronounced when you look at the data on how long hospitalists have been at their current job. Hospitalists who have been at a position for 15-19 years—the highest paid in this survey—earn around 10% more than their peers who have only two years or less on the job.

Here are mean compensation figures based on how many years respondents have worked in their current position:

2 years or less: $329,160

3-4 years: $326,460

5-9 years: $338,506

10-14 years: $346,528

15-19 years: $366,987

20+ years: $332,392

Not clear where your data comes from, but regarding the major hospitalist employers I do not think this holds true. Nocturnists in my world get the same salary regardless of experience… corporate stronghold mandates 7on/7off, fixed salary, no PTO. Sad but true; my colleagues in a competitors company say the same.
I’d like to hear from other hospitalists, especially the nocturnists.
